Jorge Lense, MD, FACOG

In March, 2011, Dr. Jorge Lense appears on the popular television program, “The Doctors”, to discuss and demonstrate the ground-breaking surgical technique, single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS), and its potential to transform the way surgeons perform hysterectomies and other gynecological surgeries.

A pioneer in gynecological laparoscopic techniques, Dr. Lense was among the first surgeons in the U.S. to use the SILS procedure to perform a hysterectomy, in March, 2009. In August, he toured Australia to demonstrate the procedure in operating centers in Melbourne and Adalaide; and he spoke to the American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists (AAGL) in Las Vegas in November, sharing the benefits and evolution of SILS in gynecological care.

Dr. Lense demonstrate Surgical Technique“Because it utilizes just a single small port through the belly button, it really represents a whole new level of capabilities in the field of surgery,” Dr. Lense says. Much of the appeal comes from the opportunity to eliminate heavy periods, treat endometriosis and uterine prolapse with decreased recovery time and little to no visible scarring. The SILS technique also is useful in performing surgeries that help preserve the uterus, he says.

He is currently working to develop a new device that will allow surgeons to more easily remove uterine tissue through the umbilicus using SILS technology, which will help reduce the time it takes to perform the procedure.

Throughout his career, Dr. Lense has been instrumental in recognizing emerging medical technologies that promise to improve surgical techniques, minimize risk and reduce recovery times and long-term side effects. Prior to joining Cherokee Women’s Health Specialists, Dr. Lense enjoyed a successful career in private practice in central Florida, where he served on the faculty of the Florida Hospital Residency Program, and received extensive training in minimally invasive surgery, pelvic reconstruction surgery and ultrasonography. He is a graduate of the University of South Florida College of Medicine and is the recipient of many academic and leadership honors in the field of medicine, including “Best Doctors in America” 2007 – 2009, and he has published numerous articles and given lectures on topics regarding gynecology and obstetrics to the medical community around the world.

Dr. Lense lives in Canton, Georgia, with his pediatrician wife, Dr. Beverly Lense, and their 8 children – 2 biological and 6 adopted (they are currently finalizing the adoption of another son, due to join the family in Spring, 2011).
